Alina is a Data Scientist in our Data Platforms team. She's based in London KX.
I work on data problems to explore connections that can move us forward. After finishing my Masters in Data Science, I joined NewDay as a mid-level Data Engineer.
My goal was to switch fields: data engineering was a stepping-stone for me, and I was open about that at interview. I chose NewDay because it looked like a place you can grow fast.
It was quite challenging to do evening classes while working full-time, so it made me very focused on my goal. You need to accumulate a lot of experience with data science problems. I was very lucky because my first project was working on a Retail Analytics platform for partners, which was complex and offered scope to develop my experience. I then switched to work on Chatbot, which was one of the ideas from a company hackathon. Winning an award for Best Use of AI was a standout moment!
There are amazing opportunities here, including the chance to learn within your team. It’s the reason I’m still here after 3 years. If you have a strong idea, you just need to voice it and put it into a plan.
I enjoy working with my manager: he’s very open to ideas from his team. We started talking about progression into a data science role, based on my development goals and the skills that NewDay was investing in.
